1. The World Wide Web Virtual Library: History of Art
This gateway of links contains high quality links to information about artists, periods, schools, countries, themes, places & objects, and museums & institutions. It is maintained by the WWW Virtual Library (www.vlib.org) which is “the best known catalog of Web Directories,” according to the author of The Extreme Searcher’s Internet Handbook. The site is sponsored by CHArt, the Computers and History of Art Group. The intended audience is everyone interested in art, with a specific focus on the academic studies of Art History. There are reference sites also available. The site seems open to user needs and suggestions, stating that suggestions are welcome via e-mail contact. No images are included, but the list of links is in alphabetical order by category. There is no search box option, but the links will take you to a variety of very useful and informative sites.
2. Yahoo! Kids Directory
This Web Directory offers a plethora of useful art history sites. You’ll notice that the sites are listed in alphabetical order by title. On the left-hand side of the page, quick links will take you to specific areas of interest, such as artists, Cubism, Egyptian Art, Pointilism, Surrealism, and more. The links are very informative, some more than others, but students will find information on many facets of their art history studies by using this directory.
3. Art History Resources on the Web
This gateway to art history sites was created by Professor Chris Witcombe at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. It is regularly updated, most recently in March 2009. It is divided into many categories, some of which are: Prehistoric Art, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, Renaissance Art, Baroque Art, and many more. It is organized so that students will easily be able to navigate and find information on a specific period of art with ease. The site also gives students the option to conduct a Google search from the homepage, if needed.
4. About: Art History
This gateway to Art History resources is organized by four tabs: Art History (home), Artists, Styles, and Works of Art. The guide to the site, Shelley Esaak is a portrait artist, educator, writer, and illustrator. She hosts a blog and forum from the site. The homepage is somewhat cluttered with ads and sponsored links, but if you can look beyond them, the information presented is valuable and useful. Other annotated links included are: Timelines of Art History, Find Museums/Galleries, Educator/Parent Resources, Art by Country or Region, and much more.
5. Voice of the Shuttle: Art and Art History
Organized by Alan Liu and a team at the University of California Santa Barbara, the Voice of the Shuttle database contains many useful links to a variety of Art History resources. They accept members, and by having a membership, you can suggest links to add to the site. The organization may seem daunting at first, but it is basically by categories and subcategories. Some categories are: General Resources, Africa, Europe, Museums, Journals, and Teaching Resources.
